Shame and guilt are important thresholds and milestones in human development and in the Pathwork. These phenomena are part of the social development of a child. They can stimulate great deeds in people including learning to love more and more, but they can also be totally paralyzing and lead to depression in some people. Shame is often at the root of both the inner critic and perfectionism. It binds with other emotions, such as Anger and Fear, so that it is often hard to detect. Also, revealing shame can be in itself shameful.

The Pathwork distinguishes between false shame and guilt, and sincere shame and guilt. Specific forms of shame are recognized, such as shame for one’s own mistakes, and shame for the higher self.  Shame is about belonging or not belonging while guilt in depth is about where we do not love and act for motives other than love, where we set our own interest against the interest of another.

In this workshop we explore the different aspects and entrances of these two important feelings, perhaps the most painful feelings of all emotions. Through exercises, meditations and emotional processing we open to the truth in these feelings and use them as gateways to growth.
