Pathwork of California Founders

Gene & Peg Humphrey

Gene & Peg Humphrey, founders of the Pathwork of California, began their Pathwork journey in Michigan. They hosted a Pathwork Study Group in their home from the late 70s through the 1980s. As the original group expanded, several members became Pathwork helpers by going with kids in tow to Phoenicia, New York  for the summer international program.

Peg was a performer, singer and Bioenergetics trainer and Gene was a businessman, who later became a PhD psychologist. Gene and Peg were a part of the first summer helper training program held in the Phoenicia Pathwork Center. Together with the new helpers in Michigan, the Great Lakes Pathwork was formed by a strong community of helpers and studentsand began offering weekend workshops and the Pathwork Transformation Program.

In the early 1990s, Gene & Peg Humphrey moved from Michigan to Del Mar, California. In the early days of POC, Gene & Peg traveled first to Los Angeles and the Bay Area and later to Tijuana, giving helper sessions and teaching the Pathwork. Peg was instrumental to establishing POC as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization as well as supporting creativity in all programs.

By mid and late ‘90s, Pathwork of California was a thriving community that hosted many weekend workshops, Transformation Programs and a Helper Training Program. In the year 2000, PoC hosted the International Pathwork Conference “In Spirit.”

Gene brought great energy to several Pathwork organizations. He served on the Pathwork Foundation and for a period as its President. Gene also served as President of Pathwork Press and the editor of “Guidelines”, the newsletter of Pathwork of California. He often wrote articles and teachings that revealed his own process as an example for others to follow his lead to look within. Peg and Gene were always up for the talent shows and auctions celebrating the end of each year with a song or two, a funny skit and shared enthusiasm for every participant. Gene was an avid fundraiser.

Peg was a singer and stage actor as well as a therapist. Peg served as a Trustee on the Pathwork Foundation and sustained an interest in the International Pathwork developments. She had a keen ability to accurately perceive what was happening within an individual or a group; she fearlessly spoke the truth, whether exposing her own shortcomings or within the Pathwork of California community.

Peg and Gene Humphrey encouraged the building of community, gave their best in service to the Pathwork and lived their commitments as Pathworkers, leaders and helpers. They enjoyed the friendships these commitments wrought and did their best to give and live in spirit. This generative spirit lives on in the continuing evolution of PoC.
